APES EcoBook #31

APES Ecobook #31
#WaterPollution
The picture below shows an example of water pollution. Plastic and waste/garbage is constantly being thrown into bodies of water. Most of our human waste is dumped into oceans.

#Fertilizer
The picture below shows an example of a fertilizer. The waste water treatment plant recycles their sludge into a fertilizer. This allows plants and soil to be more nutritious and will help the plant grow strong and healthy. Fertilizing your plant will allow plants to be rich, and healthy.

The picture bellow shows an example of Urban Sprawl. Large buildings and houses are being built in an area around a city and are continuing to expand. It shows the expantion of buildings, houses, and stores being built.

Waste Water Treatment Plant Reflection From Deer Island

                    Waste Water Treatment Plant Reflection

What I learned from the Waste Water Treatment Plant in Deer Island is that all of the cities waste water goes into Deer Island. There it's passed through many stages which then is back dumped into the Boston Harbor. First it goes to a pump station that pumps the waste water up with gravity. Then the water is moved to Primary Sedimentation,  Secondary Reactions, and Secondary Sedimentation. Then after that whole process is done it goes into Chlorination/Dechlorination. After all of these steps are finished the water then goes back into the Boston Harbor. The awesome thing about this facility is that the water treatment produces sludge. They figured out a way by recycling the sludge into fertilizing it. The sludge is recycled and it's called Bay Set Fertilizer. This big treatment plant only works if everyone is cooperating and doing their job right. Everything is neatly labeled and the facility is run 24/7.

The Waste Water Treatment Plant is a very important aspect in our world, especially for us. They are able to manufacture our waste water into clean water. Without this waste water facility where would our waste water go? Probably back into the ocean or just keep on taking excessive space in landfills. I love how Deer Island has been able to keep the Boston Harbor clean and safe for everyone. I love to see how our waste water can be turned into clean and safe water and dump back into the ocean. This treatment plant is important to environmental science because it allows contaminated water to be turned into clean and safe water. It provides clean water back into the Boston Harbor keeping the water clean and providing safety to us.

scrAPES #21- Living On Earth Podcast

scrAPES #21- Living On Earth Podcast Charles River

This podcast is about how dirty the Charles River is. Water pollution in the Charles river was so high that it was no longer safe to swim. The EPA gave the water quality a D in year 1995, but now it has risin to a B in 2011. There used to be swimming competition over the past 8 years and it was called the Charles River Swim Club. The Charles river contained high levels of lead, sewage, and lots of copper and metal. Many people said that it feels great, others said it was a horrible experience. Water pollution in the Charles River still continued because the Boston Globe announced an algae bloom in the Charles River in the year 2015. The water pollution in the Charles River will never end and it will probably still remain dirty.

The reason why I decided to listen to this podcast was because water pollution is a serious cause to our Earth. It was crazy to see how people described the river. Some say the color was orange and others said it's still an amazing swim! The fact that people where still allowed to swim even though the bottom of the river was toxic seems outrageous. I would never want to swim in a river if it was polluted that's just disgusting. I would probably get sick easily.

This podcast is important to environmental scientist because water pollution is dangerous. Water pollution can impact humans, aquatic, and land animals. Many fishes can die and water pollution can spread diseases. Water pollution can impact a human if they drink it. Drinking polluted water can result to death and many different diseases. If people continued to swim in the Charles River they would be contaminated with polluted water and they can possibly die.

scrAPES #20 - Radioactive Boar Are Thriving And Causing Havoc Near The Fukushima Power Plant

This article talks about how once 5 years ago tsunami waves crashed into Fukushima Daiichi power plant and caused a nuclear meltdown. There was radiation chemicals 12 miles around the land it was considered the dangerous zone. The radiation caused a boom in boars where the population went from 3,000 to 13,000. Population rising for the boars meant only trouble for the area. The  boars have caused 15 million dollar damage to the local agriculture and they keep on damaging the place. The radiation does not affect the boars and has shown no significant harm to them. Many hunters have been offered to kill these boars but it's not enough. The city of Nihonmatsu has dug three massive graves that can hold up to 1,800 dead boars but still that is not enough to stop the boom of boars.

The reason why I chose this article was because I wanted to learn more about natural disasters and how they are caused. Even animals like the boars can cause a natural disaster to the world. If the boars aren't stopped then they will just keep on increasing and so will the damage. Maybe they can figure out a poison that will only affect the life of boars and with one sniff of that poison all the boars can die. They better do something quick otherwise it will only get worse.

This article is important to environmental science because if the boars keep increasing then they will soon start attacking humans. It will only create more chaos and destruction on many different ecosystems and habitats. If the population increases then it will affect hunting, farming, forestry, and many other different things. That boars have already caused 15 million dollars of damage to local agriculture and if we don't put a stop to this the money will only increase.

Pacific Garbage Patch

                        Pacific Garbage Patch Reflection

What I learned from watching the documentary Pacific Garbage Patch is that there is so much plastic and waste being dumped into the pacific. A group of people traveled by boat to the middle of the Pacific Ocean to discover how much waste and trash there is. The group found a variety of things such as: a ball, tire, plastic, and even "the ghost of plastic" The ghost of plastic was remarkable. It was a big glob of ropes tied up to each other. In the ropes there was trash, plastic, garbage and even a toothbrush! This just shows how much trash is being dumped into the Pacific Ocean. The group stated that the ratio between plastic to sea life is 6:1. They predicted that it would take everyone in planet Earth 100,000 trucks EACH to just clean the pacific ocean. So any volunteers on filling up your 100,000 trucks load of garbage!

So where is this trash coming from? It's mainly coming from human activities and especially developed countries such as China and the U.S. Most of the plastic ends up in the shores of beaches and lakes. But that isn't the case. Once the Pacific Ocean has consumed the plastic and garbage it is very hard to "spit out" the trash again. Even after the ocean spits out the trash it gets landed near beaches being even more contaminated. At this rate if we continue producing out waste into oceans we will be living with trash. The use of plastic should be stopped it will only get worse if we continue throwing our plastic onto the oceans.
